Hand-carved wooden figure decorated with Zapotec symbols.
About the artist: Jorge and Santa are two young Oaxacans born in the town of San Martin Tilcajete, the birthplace of Alebrijes in Oaxaca. Jorge Fabian is the artist conveying the figures and hand carving them from copal wood. Thereafter, Santa is the master of decoration, using natural pigments and acrylics to capture Zapotec symbols in each of the pieces, each one giving a different relevance in life. The first alebrije originated in 1936 and since then master artisans like Jorge and Santa practice and train for many years in order to be able to create beautifully intricate pieces, each one unique, that imagine mythical creatures that you see in your dreams.
