Chalchihuihtotolin is the Aztec deity of diseases but when he took on his feathered form, he was renowned for his ability to cleanse people of contamination, absolve guilt, and overcome their fate. On this canvas, he is depicted in feathered form. The background is inspired by the interior of the Cholula Pyramid and adds a mystical dimension to the work. Chalchihuihtotolin is presented with power and vulnerability at the same time, making us reflect on how disease and healing are connected to the human experience. This painting plunges us into the mysterious world of Aztec mythology and invites us to consider the complexity of good health, its impact, and the role it plays in our lives.

About the artist:
Pablo Esteban was born in Mexico and his family emigrated to Holland when he was 10 years old. Following his artistic aspirations, he enrolled in graphic design studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague. During his time there, Pablo cultivated a distinctive style characterized by a meticulous interplay of color and expression. It was not until 2011 that Pablo moved to his father's hometown, Oaxaca, where he completely immersed himself in painting. Pablo's work is defined by his expressionist style trying to capture what it means to be human, duality, and the contradictions we have as living beings.
